When White Makes a Statement

I hear people say all the time "Won't white be boring?". Let me tell you, white can be absolutely gorgeous in a monochromatic white room, but it HAS to be done right. Did you know there are literally hundreds of "Whites" in the color world? And when you start mixing white tile with white paint with white window treatments, you are walking a thin line between stunning and sloppy. So, to help you decide which direction to go, here are a few tips I have learned in my years working with color and whites especially:

1. Not all whites are created equal

What I mean is, what works in your best friend's home may not work in your home. Lighting can have a dramatic effect on how a color looks in your home. Just because it works in your friend's well lit master bath doesn't mean it will work in your low lit laundry room. Make sure you test it out with a large sample board first. Which brings me to my next tip:

2. Use large sample boards rather than small paint chips

A sample can of paint is an inexpensive way to make sure you are getting the color you want before you paint an entire room. (Some of you may be thinking, duh!, but you'd be surprised how many people skip this step.) By painting samples on a large white foam board, you can see the true color of the paint compared to the "true white" of the foam board. That helps you see undertones more clearly.

3. Stay in the same temperature

There are two different temperatures of color: Cool vs Warm (or Clean vs Dirty, whichever you prefer). Cool whites lend themselves more to blueish undertones, while warm whites tend to be more of the yellowish hues. These variances can be very subtle, but once you know how to look for it, you can begin to recognize the vast differences between color temperatures.
